What is this?

How many of you have seen a logo or tag that says, "Help keep me blogging"? I have seen it once or twice, and out of curiousity, I clicked on it. It took me straight to PayPal and asked me how much I wanted to "donate" to the blogger's account. Are you kidding me?

Let me ask you this... Would you transfer money into someone's PayPal account? Someone you had never met? Someone who hasn't provided any type of goods or services? Someone who doesn't have a "cause?" Just to "help" them keep blogging? If so, let me hook you up with my PayPal account so I can quit my job and blog all day! Not! Is it just me, or is this presumptuous? Am I over-reacting?

  1. OMG it is sooooooooo presumptious! You are not over-reacting at all. Some of us were raised with a work ethic while others seems to have been missing the day they passed those out. I was always taught there's no such thing as a free lunch and I'm not about to pay for someone else's lunch (at least unless I invited them to lunch) when I need to eat too.

  2. I agree that it's presumptuous, and not only would I probably never contribute but I'd probably also not visit the blog again. That said, however, I see why people do it and it must work on some readers.

  3. I have a donate button on my sidebar, so it's pretty obvious what it is. Has anyone ever used it? Nope. LOL.

I have donated a couple dollars here and there though when I sense a true need.

  5. I've seen stories on "internet begging" on the news programs on tv. Some people seem to be very good at getting money this way. It's not what I would choose - either as a donator or as a recipient. Begging is begging whether it's online or panhandling on the street. I give to charity - that is my choice and where I think it will do the most good.

  6. Thanks for commenting on my post from yesterday. Don't be afraid to try the meta tags -- believe me, if I can do it anyone can.

  8. You're definitely NOT overreacting, forgetfulone! Who would be dumb enough to donate to PayPal to keep someone blogging?

  9. Well said. I've wondered that as well...I read one blog for a while until the author became incensed when people didn't play the paypal game and actually stopped blogging. Hello?

  11. For the average blogger, yes, I'd say that was a bit off-putting. For blogs that offer lots of tutorials, tips and other great stuff then I can understand why they'd have that button. But I think that they'd be better off calling it a donate button instead. (I'm thinking of blogs like Whipup.net which has lots of interesting articles all the time.)

Thanks for playing the Ultimate Blog Party with me! :-)
