British Terms

I just finished reading a book called The Woman Before Me written by English author Ruth Dugdall.  It was a great book, but what I want to share with you today are some British words that we Americans are not accustomed to.  It was super fun learning (through context) some words from a different dialect.  Join us for Thursday Thirteen!

1.  Post = Mail -  Example:  I need to post a letter.

2.  Cot = Baby Bed - Example:  The infant was safe in his cot.
3.  Knickers = Underwear or Panties - Example:  She stood there wearing only her knickers.
No picture of knickers!  This is a family-friendly blog!  LOL

4.  Take-aways = Take-out food - Example:  We ate take-aways for dinner.
5.  Pet = Dear - Example:  Would you bring that to me, Pet?
I thought about a picture of a dog (pet) or a deer (for dear).

6.  Dummy = Pacifier - Example:  The baby was crying, so I put a dummy in his mouth.
7.  Jabs = Shots or Immunizations - Example:  The baby is fussy after he gets his jabs.
8.  Loo = Restroom or Bathroom - Example:  Excuse me while I go to the loo.
9.  Lie-in = Sleep Late - Example:  Saturday I get a lie-in.
I thought about putting a picture of a bed here, but I didn't want any snarky comments!  tee hee!

10. Nappy = Diaper - Example:  The baby needs a clean nappy.
11. Trolley = Cart or Buggy - Example:  I grabbed a trolley and did my grocery shopping.
12. Nibbles = Appetizers - Example:  I'm going to put some crackers and cheese out for nibbles.
13.  Mate = Friend - Example:  Say hello to your mate for me. This isn't just an Australian thing!

I hope you enjoyed this!

A Little Random and Some Coffee

Welcome to my random thoughts.  Link up with Stacy and play along!

I hardly slept Sunday night.  I have no idea why.  On the weekend, I'm a night owl.  I can stay up till 2 AM quite easily, and I can sleep in, especially on Saturday.  I wish every day were like that!  But, I have to be an adult and get up and go to work five days a week.  So, I got up and went in spite of only sleeping about four hours.  It was a long day!

Thoughts just go through my mind and I can't turn my brain off.  Anyone else have that problem?  I can hear shouts of "Yes!" and "Me!" throughout the blogosphere.  I know I'm not alone in that.  But it really sucks!

My son just did a 6 minute speech on Ernest Hemingway.  I helped him type his outline, and I learned a lot about him.  I actually thought it was fun, especially since I have toured his home in Key West.

So... completely changing the subject, since this is supposed to be random... My darling daughter comes home from England in 8 days.  I. CAN'T. WAIT! She'll be coming home with 16 credit hours of college course work and immeasurable maturity and global awareness.  While studying abroad, she has been to 9 different countries, countries I will likely never see.  I can't wait to hear all about it! (Here she is in a meadow somewhere near Oxford, England.)

And on another note, my husband and I started watching Arrested Development on Netflix.  We've watched about six episodes so far, maybe 7.  I'm not sure I like it yet.  I don't dislike it.  I just don't know if I like it well enough to devote time to watch it.  Any thoughts?

And now, it's time for Coffee Chat with Rorey Bore.

Our lovely hostess says, “It’s a Random Chat. Pick a topic, let loose a rant, explain American politics to me… whatever your mind needs to release. “

Here goes:  I need to call the city to get a street light replaced.  It's been out for months.  Of course, any one of my family or neighbors could also have called, but have they?  Nope.

My son finally has a girlfriend.  He's 19, and it's not as if he hasn't ever dated, but he really hasn't had a serious girlfriend until now.  And my nephew, who is 25, is getting serious with his girlfriend, like, marriage serious.  And my daughter who is 23 is engaged.  Love is definitely in the air!

Now, on to American politics.
Ha!  Fat chance!
I couldn't begin to explain that to anyone without sounding like an idiot.  There really is no simple explanation.  It's complicated and crazy!  But you can go HERE for a crash course!

Have a great week, everyone!

Random Tuesday and Coffee Chat

Join Stacy for some Randomness!

Wow!  I have been a slacker lately!  But only where writing for the blog is concerned.  I can't believe it's only Tuesday!  Work is so busy!  I know I shouldn't wish my life away, but I can't wait for June 3.  That's when I'll be FREEEEEEEE!  Well, free for 2 and a half months, anyway, so I can concentrate on more important tasks such as helping both my son and daughter get settled at college and maybe, just maybe, getting started on wedding plans for another daughter.  Exciting!

So my husband left the cat out for a little while, even though she's an INDOOR cat, so I had to give her a bath last night.  Yes, you heard "cat" and "bath" in the same sentence.  She doesn't like it, but she tolerates it.  She's all clean now!

Sunday I received this picture from my daughter:

She is studying abroad, and they are on a trip to France (duh).  It's so beautiful!  I envy my own daughter.  My husband has promised me a trip to Europe within the next five years.  By then, all the kids should be out of college, and maybe I will get to retire early so I can have a flexible schedule.

And I also got this cute video from my daughter (the one who's engaged).

Adorable!  Takes less than a minute to watch, but the cuteness will have you feeling good all day!

And now, it's time for Coffee Chat

Our hostess asks
How's it Hanging?
Tell us about one of your favorite hangouts

I don't really hang out anymore.  Well, I guess that's not completely true. I guess my favorite spot to hang out now is in my daughter's room.  I can watch whatever I want on TV (she has a large one hanging on the wall), I can get school work done, and it's cozy.  Another "hangout" I have right now is Facebook Messenger on my phone.  I only have myself available to one person, and that's my daughter who is studying abroad.  As long as she has WiFi, we can send messages back and forth, and we can even talk to each other, and it's all FREE!

Mostly, I hang out at home, and if I'm not cleaning or cooking, I enjoy sleeping!  Guess that's all for now!
