Before He Kills by Blake Pierce
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Mackenzie White is a young, female detective on a small police force in Nebraska made up of a bunch of chauvinistic good ole boys. They don't treat her with the respect she has earned, and to top it off, she's stuck in a dead-end relationship that is going nowhere.
She's been called to the scene of a murder. An exotic dancer has been kidnapped, tied to a pole, and flogged to death. When the second murder happens almost identical to the first, the locals call in the FBI. Mackenzie takes a lead role in the investigation. But things don't go as planned, and she ends up in a fight for her life.
This is the first Blake Pierce book that I have read. I liked that it was a quick read, slightly less than 200 pages. It was also suspenseful. Pierce did a good job of characterizing Mackenzie, but I feel like a few other characters made quick personality changes without motivation. The story had enough twists to keep the reader interested, and I will likely read the next book in the series.
