The Judge's List by John Grisham
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I was a little disappointed in this latest endeavor from Grisham, who, by the way, is one of my favorite authors. I have come to expect intensity, thoughtfully written plots, plot twists, compelling characters, engaging dialogue, and so much more from J. G. This one was a good book... but not as good as the first in this series, The Whistler.
The Whistler kept me guessing. Grisham created a lot of suspense. This one was less suspenseful and nothing unusually surprising was revealed. It was only a matter of time until the villain was caught, and his actions were quite predictable as were those of "Jeri," the woman who outsmarted police and tied the murders together.
Lacy Stoltz is not satisfying as a main character. There isn't enough depth to her personality. I have not developed a fondness for her such as the fondness I have for Jake Brigance or Carl Lee Haley. And the concept was just much too far-fetched in this particular novel. It's fiction, yes. But it's extraordinarily unbelievable, much less so than The Whistler, book one.
So... is it a good book? Yes. Is it as good as I expect Grisham to be? No.
