Hi everyone. I hope everyone who had Memorial Day off enjoyed it! If you are not from the U. S., it is a day we honor military personnel who have died while serving our country.
Often, volunteers place flags and/or wreaths on graves of fallen soldiers. For most of us, it's a reminder that others gave their life for our freedom. It also unofficially marks the beginning of summer, at least here in Texas where it is already HOT outside!
Our little granddaughter was visiting this weekend, and I got to thinking about songs and nursery rhymes we used to sing when we were little. They were catchy little tunes, but as it turns out, they were heavy with symbolism. For example, Ring Around the Rosie.
The disease was actually carried by rats and fleas, but back then, it was believed that the Plague was spread through bad smells, so they would carry posies (flowers) and hold them up to their faces as protection against bad smells.
Did you also know the fear of smells is why doctors wore those ridiculous beak masks that are scarier than heck? They worked in a similar way to gas masks. And apparently, people with Bubonic Plague emitted some foul odors!
Ashes, ashes... Victims were burned when they died. This could be what is referred to here, or it simply mimics the sound of a sneeze, another symptom. (Some people think it says, "A tissue, a tissue."
We all fall down... This represents that many people with the Plague died. 30-60% of Europe's population was wiped out due to Plague.
So much for a fun children's nursery rhyme! How about some laughs?
Gotta love those dad jokes.. and no, I did not write "favoritest!" I know better! |

When my knee replacement developed an infection a few years ago I was required to see an infectious disease specialist for my intravenous antibiotics. Extremely intelligent and perfectly pleasant, I still always cringed when I walked, she'll, wheeled into the office, because her waiting room had art prints of plague era doctors in those masks. Creepy!
ReplyDeleteI did know that about Ring around the Rosie.
ReplyDeleteYikes on that beak mask. That is creepy.
Love all the funnies and my favorite is the pill one. I hated giving (trying) to give pills to our cats.
Thank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Happy Tuesday. ♥
This was a very informative and funny post. Not sure I am happy to know about Ring Around The Rosie...
ReplyDeleteSome of the other rhymes have even worse meanings, you might not want to look up any more of them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laughs!
