You know when bad things start happening and you're waiting for the other shoe to drop? Yeah, you do. But that leaves me wondering, "When did the first shoe drop?" Right? I heard that phrase while watching The Bear (a series on Hulu), and I've always wondered what it means. In case you wondered, too...

During the late19th century when manufacturing was booming, tenement living became common. In New York City, in particular, one bedroom was built upon another bedroom, upon another, and so on, and the tenants could hear what was happening above them. So, when someone came home and took off their shoe, the person below would hear and knew that the other shoe was going to drop, too. Thus, the phrase, "Waiting for the other shoe to drop," was born. (source) It just means that we're waiting for the inevitable.
Huh. Not what I expected, but I guess I don't know what I expected! And moving right along...
