I've had this "burning" question for a few days now. What, exactly, are the hiccups?
According to the Mayo Clinic, hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm. I guess we already knew that. The spasm causes your vocal cords to close suddenly. That's what makes the "hic" sound.
Why do we get hiccups? Well, we already know from experience that things such as sodas, eating too much, swallowing air, and too much alcohol can cause them. But I didn't know that sudden changes in temperature can also cause them. Did you?
Ideas to get rid of hiccups: Hold your breath, breathe in a paper bag, sip cold water, press on your eyes (closed, I'm sure), pull on your tongue, bite a lemon, or swallow a spoonful of sugar. (Hey, it helps the medicine go down, right?)
Mayo Clinic also says that you should consult a doctor if you have hiccups for 48 hours. 48 HOURS!? Wouldn't that be awful? That's too long! So that was my burning question for today. Moving along now...
True! We were in the 80's today. |

Love all the funnies. I can't pick a favorite. I also love all the hiccup cures. There are so many. Some work and some don't.

Heeheehee! Great funnies, thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes, hiccups can become chronic and be very disruptive to life. The worst case ever was Charles Osborne, who had hiccups for 68 years, as confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records.
